Dr. Tom Boates taught chemistry for 32 years at Bemidji State. In 2010, chemistry alumni created a fund in Boates' honor to provide scholarships to a chemistry senior entering their senior year who plans to attend graduate school. The fund can also be used to defray expenses for chemistry alumni to travel back to campus to advise students on career and higher education aspirations. Boates once said that receiving recognition from his former students through the Dr. Tom and Jan Boates Chemistry Endowment was "the greatest event in my professional life." Donations to this fund help fuel the endowment and widen its impact for years to come.
