The Torch Burning Bright campaign seeks to build a new library and academic center at Baltimore City College. The campaign is the most aggressive and ambitious fundraising campaign in the school's history. The phrase “Torch Burning Bright” comes from the school song, “Castle on the Hill” from the line, “May her torch burn ever bright." The torch is a metaphor for the enlightenment and knowledge that students earn at the school and pass on to future generations. Therefore, this campaign is also about passing on something to future generations -- a school that has a 21st century library equipped with the resources necessary for college preparation.
We launched the campaign in January 2015 with a goal of raising $2.0 million. So far we've raised $1.8 million. Our goal for this campaign on GiveCampus is to raise $100,000 by December 1st.
In support of these goals, we are challenging each City class to raise $2,500 and/or secure donations from 25 members of their class. Each class that meets this challenge will be recognized on the library's donor wall--and the classes that raise the most money and secure the most donations will be honored at the opening ceremony for the library!
Alumni, parents, and community members are encouraged to make gifts in honor of their loved ones that are attending or have attended City College. When making a gift you can "Honor" an individual or a graduation year.
For more information about the campaign visit citycollegelibrary.org.
Prefer to make a gift by mail? Don't worry, it will still count toward the challenge. Just make your check out to the Fund for Educational Excellence, designate "BCC Library" in the memo section of the check, and send it to 800 North Charles Street, Suite 400, Baltimore, MD 21201.
The Fund for Educational Excellence (“The Fund”) is the fiscal sponsor for Torch Burning Bright: The BCC Library Campaign. The Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to improve achievement for all students in Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools). It works side-by-side with City Schools providing invaluable support for many of the district’s most important reform initiatives. The organization’s mission is to secure the financial, human, and knowledge resources necessary to support policy and practice resulting in increased achievement for Baltimore City Public Schools students. All contributions are tax-deductible unless otherwise noted.

Dear Supporter,
On September 22, 2016 we celebrated the grand opening of our new Center for Teaching and Learning - a 13,000 square foot space that includes the Joseph Meyerhoff Library, Doetsch Hall, the Cordish Technology Center, and three peer tutoring centers including the Reed Math and Science Center, and the Writing Center.
At the midway point of the year, our students sat down to reflect on what the new space has meant to them. We are excited to share their reflections today.
Click here to read our midyear report.
The Center for Teaching and Learning was made possible by you! With over 1,000 gifts and over $2.2 million in contributions -- 72% of which were private dollars and 60% of which were alumni dollars -- this was truly a community effort.
The new space continues to be the hub of activity on campus, with over 10,000 visits since the grand opening. Thank you for making this possible!

The Results
The parents and students of the Class of 2018, the current sophomore class, received more gifts than any other class with 70 gifts. The Class of 1964 received 44 gifts, which was the most among all alumni classes. And, the Class of 1965 raised more money than any other class as they brought home $33,218 in the year of their 50th reunion. We have raised $49,990 from 390 donors since we launched the Class Challenge. So far 12 graduating classes have earned their way onto the giving wall. But with only a little over a week left to go in the challenge this is the last chance for your class to earn it's way onto the giving wall in the new library.
Right now the Class of 1993 is only 1 gift short of it's goal and the Class of 1957 is only $230 short. Who will be the next class to join the giving wall? Will it be 1993, 1957, or will we see another class surge in the final days to earn their place in City College history.

3248 days ago by The Black KnightWow! We've had quite a few days! First on Friday night we were staked out at the All Class Reunion and then Saturday we had a massive volunteer army battling the elements to collect donations at the City-Poly game. All in all we raised over $2,000 in small dollar gifts over the weekend.
Then yesterday, after we sent out the campaign update we saw another huge outpouring of support. If you missed the campaign update you can check it out here: http://us11.campaign-archive1.com/?u=239f2be7d70f0...
Score Board
As you saw in the update, we are now counting all gifts made over the course of the entire library campaign toward the class challenge. This means that the Class of 1964 is in the lead for most gifts with 44 and the Class of 1965 is in the lead for most raised with $33,163.40. We now have 11 classes that have earned their way onto the giving wall.
The classes of 1993 and 1995 look to be well positioned to be the next classes to join the giving wall, with only two gifts to go for each. You can see the full score board below.

The results are in from our first day of the New School vs. Old School competition and Old School is in the lead by five gifts! Remember to select "New School" or "Old School" from the incentive menu when making your gift to vote for whether you think there should be more e-books (New School) or "real" books (Old School) in the new library. And don't forget to share the students fun video about New School vs. Old School with your friends and family: http://gvcmp.us/p3luae.
Score Board
All together we received over 20 gifts yesterday and two classes - 1964 and 1984 - continued to battle it out for most gifts made, alternating in the lead over the course of the day. Ultimately, 1964 took the lead back from 1984 and now maintains a two gift advantage over them. There was also impressive turnouts from the Classes of 1995, 1993, 1959 and 1957. Through their efforts the Class of 1959 extended their dollar lead.

City-Poly Game
Tomorrow is the 127th playing of "The Game" at M&T Bank Stadium. Tickets are available for a discounted rate in advance at the All Class Reunion tonight at the school from 6-9pm and they will also be available for purchase at the gate. This year City is on the North side which means that we should enter the stadium through Gate A just off of Hamburg Street. We will have a table outside gate A with a big library banner so you can't miss us. We hope you will stop by and say hello.
Also, if you selected a free City-Poly ticket as your incentive when making a gift (which we are now all sold out of!), or you earned one through your advocacy, you will pick your ticket up at the game from our table.
If you have any questions send JD.Merrill@baltimorecitycollege.us an e-mail!
Have a great day, and as always, City Forever!
3259 days ago by The Black KnightDear Supporters -
This is Max Janes '18 and Sicily Kolbeck '18, both sophomores at City and current student co-chairs of the library campaign.
At our last fundraising committee meeting we had an interesting discussion: Do we fill the new library with more e-books or with more "real" books?
We thought the question was too good for us to keep to ourselves. City students even made a little video about it. You can watch it here: http://gvcmp.us/p3luae.
So, we want to know what you think. Here’s how to vote:
New School: E-books
Make a gift of at least $10, select “New School” as the incentive when making your gift, and we’ll purchase an e-book in your honor and post your name on our library webpage as a book donor.
Vote for New School at http://www.citycollegelibrary.org/newschool
Old School: "Real" Books
Make a gift of at least $10, select “Old School” as the incentive when making your gift, and we’ll purchase a "real" book in your honor and place your name on a sticker on the inside cover.
Vote for Old School at http://www.citycollegelibrary.org/oldschool
The amount we raise will determine the number of books, both e- and "real", that go into the new library. It’s all up to you!
We'll be posting updates at citycollegelibrary.org/facebook so be sure to check on our progress. And feel free to forward this e-mail to your friends to get them on your side!
Thank you for your ongoing support!
Sincerely & City Forever!
Max & Sicily
Score Board
Yesterday the Class of 1993 received 5 gifts, bringing them into second place for the most gifts, just behind the Class of 1964 and the Class of 1984 who are in a tie for the lead. The Class of 1959 is still in the lead for most money given.

We will have a big banner hanging from our tent that looks like this. Hopefully we will be hard to miss!
We will also have the apparel incentives at our table for you to pick up if you selected one. Any incentives that are not picked up at the game will be mailed to you. If you have any questions please e-mail JD.Merrill@baltimorecitycollege.us directly or if you know that you cannot attend the game and will need your incentive mailed please e-mail JD.Merrill@baltimorecitycollege.us and include your mailing address in the body of the e-mail. Yesterday we saw a huge surge in gifts thanks to a last minute effort to meet the challenge offered by an anonymous alum to raise $500 in 24 hours in order to receive $250. While many classes stepped up, it was the Classes of 1995 and 1999 that really came out in force and enabled us to hit the $500 mark within 24 hours. You can see the full score board below:
We have now raised over $33,000 in the last month, but we still have a ways to go before we will have raised enough to fully outfit the new library with the furniture, books, and technology our students need. 3267 days ago by The Black KnightThe decade of the '90s continues to see a surge in giving. Yesterday, nearly 70% of all gifts received were from the '90s.
That said, the Class of 1984 is still in the lead for most number of gifts and the Class of 1959 is still in the lead for most raised, but '84 is sneaking back up on them, now down by less than $200.
Additionally, yesterday we were challenged by Jeff Blum '64! His challenge is that if we raise $500 in the next 12 days he will make a contribution of $500. Let's meet his challenge!

3268 days ago by The Black KnightYesterday, there was a moment when the Class of 1984 and the Class of 1964 were tied for most gifts, but the Class of 1984 responded immediately with several gifts to give them another lead.
The Class of 1959 continues to lead the dollar race with the most money raised.
But perhaps the biggest news yesterday was the number of gifts that came in from the '90s, led by the Classes of 1993, 1995, and 1999.

The Classes of 1984 and 1964 went tit-for-tat with each other all weekend long. At the end of the day it was the Class of 1984 that was able to maintain the lead by 1 gift. But, with a new matching gift in the works for the Class of 1964, we'll see how long '84's lead lasts!
Additionally, the Class of 1959 built on their dollar lead over the weekend to hold onto first place for most money raised!
Keep up the great work! See the full score board below:

3270 days ago by The Black KnightAt the beginning of the day yesterday the Class of 1964 was comfortably in the lead for the most number of gifts and the Class of 1984 was comfortably in the lead for most money raised.
All of that changed yesterday. With the encouragement of Daneker, Eiseman, and Walker the Class of 1959 roared past the Class of 1984 for the dollar lead, bringing their total raised to $2,780.
But all wasn't lost for the Class of 1984. They immediately responded with a solid day for their part, with a series of gifts that enabled them to pull past the Class of 1964 for the most number of gifts with 19.
The pattern we're seeing is that the better organized a class is, the more successful their efforts are. If you have an e-mail list or a phone list for your class, be sure to share the campaign with them and encourage them to step up for our students and for our school.

P.S. There was a great article in the NYT yesterday about libraries. Here's a short excerpt:
"Every economic crisis responds, first of all, by cutting funds to culture. But the dismantling of our libraries and changing their nature is not simply a matter of economics. Somewhere in our time, we began to forget what memory — personal and collective — means, and the importance of common symbols that help us understand our society."
This campaign is about doing the opposite of cutting funds to culture. This campaign is about a community remembering the importance of a library to an institution, and making a very intentional decision to rebuild one for the students and school community. Your efforts are meaningful, and we thank you!

3274 days ago by The Black KnightThe shoot out between 1959 and 1960 came to a screeching halt yesterday with neither class bringing in any gifts. 3274 days ago by The Black KnightYesterday the Class of 1960 continued to surge, narrowly pushing past the Class of 1959 for 2nd place in the money race. How will 1959 respond? Will '59 show the little brother class who is best? Or will the Class of 1960 build on their momentum and pull away to threaten and overtake the Class of 1984's lead? There's only one way to find out, have your classmates make a gift now! citycollegelibrary.org/challenge.

3275 days ago by The Black KnightYesterday nearly 20 students stayed for an hour and a half after school to make phone calls to our alumni, encouraging them to participate in our challenge. And boy did our alumni step up! We've now raised over $26,000 in the past 22 days!
While the Class of 1984 still holds the lead for most money raised in the last 22 days, the class of 1959 is within earshot.
But perhaps the biggest news coming out of yesterday is the emergence of the Class of 1960; now in third place for most money raised. At their 55th reunion this past Saturday Milton Dugger (June, '60) stepped up and pledged $1,000 and called on his classmates to match it.
Yesterday Mr. Dugger followed through on his pledge. Now the question is, will his classmates follow through too? They have the Classes of 1984 and 1959 to catch!

3276 days ago by The Black KnightAfter three weeks the Class of 1964 has pulled ahead into sole possession of first place for the most number of gifts and the Class of 1984 is still in the lead with the most raised.
As we move into the final three weeks of the campaign let us keep in mind why we are doing this. As a community, prior to partnering with GiveCampus, we had raised enough money to build the new library. But we were yet to raise enough to fill the library up with the things that will make it functional for our students -- namely furniture, books, technology, etc.
That's why we called on you for help to get us across the finish line. And you've stepped up in a major way. We've raised nearly $25,000 in cold hard cash that we will be able to use for resources for our students.
But here's the thing: we still need you. We still need to get your friends, family, and classmates to help. We need you to do this because the whole idea behind this effort is to raise enough money to be able to provide enough resources to support all of our students, not just a quarter of them.
So to recognize your efforts we are adding in some new incentives.
If you use your unique giving link (available while signed in to GiveCampus under the advocates tab) and raise $2,500 or generate 50 donations we will permanently recognize your efforts to our campaign by placing your name on the giving wall in the new library. You can track your progress on the advocates tab to see how close you are to reaching your goal in real time.
As a community, we should be seeking 100% participation from our alumni. Even if that gift is only $1, that $1 is symbolically so important to our school. That $1 sends a message to our students that says, "I'm with you."
So thank you all for being with us in such a real way and for all that you've done for our school. Now let's go out there and finish this historic campaign!
City Forever!
3277 days ago by The Black KnightYesterday was a big day! We received over 20 gifts online, yet the Classes of 1964 and 1984 are still tied for the lead.
Also, thank you to all the families that came out to Chick-Fil-A for Spirit Night last night to support our library campaign. Here are a few pictures from the event:
3280 days ago by The Black KnightWell take a look at that! Just a day after the Class of 1964 took a definitive lead in the number of gifts, the Class of 1984 came surging right back! It's now all tied up again.
Additionally, this morning the Baltimore Sun Media Group published a column by Kathy Hudson about our campaign. She wrote:
"It seems a miracle, and a testament to the dedication of the teachers and students, that despite the lack of resources, City turns out so many graduates who head to the country's most prestigious colleges. Ninety-eight percent of the student body goes on to college, with 87 percent going to four-year colleges. Forty-eight percent of these students are the first in their families to attend college. As a traditional public school, with no fundraising office, infrastructure, or historical precedent, the school community has rallied around this all-volunteer effort to build a new library. In ten months the school has raised over $1.8 million dollars with support."

Now is the time for us to buckle down and cross the finish line. Share the article and this campaign with your friends and family and encourage all you know to make a gift: http://gvcmp.us/18ixwl.
Additionally, if you are in the Baltimore area, please join us tonight for our campaign's Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A in Parkville, located at 2008 East Joppa Road from 5-8pm. Dine in, Carry Out or Drive Thru, simply tell your server you're there for Spirit Night and 20% of your sale will be donated to our campaign. Order a Chocolate Chunk Cookie and we will receive and extra $1 towards our cause!
City Forever!
3281 days ago by The Black KnightWith a strong stretch over the last two days the Class of 1964 has pulled into a definitive lead over the Class of 1984 for the most number of gifts, but the Class of 1984 maintains a $500 lead over the Class of 1959 for most money raised. Keep up the great work!
Here's the full score board:
3282 days ago by The Black KnightThe Class of 1965 and 1984 are still in the lead for the most number of gifts and the Class of 1984 still has raised the most amount of money, but keep an eye on the surging Class of 1959 with $1,480 raised!
3284 days ago by The Black KnightAfter two weeks we have some serious competition heating up between the Class of 1965 and the Class of 1984 who are tied for the lead for most number of gifts. But when it comes to the most money raised the Class of 1984 has a clear lead with $2,010 raised.
One of the most glaring observations from the first two weeks, however, is the fact that there has only been ONE gift from the entire decade of the 1970s. If anyone knows anyone that graduated in the '70s will you wake them up, sing them the fight song "Loyal we'll always be," and remind them that our loyalty must translate to charity. Our school needs us now, so now is the time for us to give back!
“City Forever”
City forever,
We’ll praise her to the sky.
We’ll fight for old City
Rah! Rah! Rah!
Dear alma mater
Loyal we’ll always be.
City forever
And for victory.
