What is Next Generation?

For the past thirteen years, the National Honor Society of the Baldwin School of Puerto Rico has hosted a fundraising activity called Next Generation, benefiting international and local charities as well as non-profit organizations. Last year, with the help of your donations, we were able to raise $37,000 for La Maraña. This year, the National Honor Society has modified the event and will be hosting a virtual 5K in which all proceeds will once again be donated to La Maraña.

What is La Maraña?

La Maraña is a non-profit organization that aspires to strengthen and promote the transition of Puerto Rico’s cities and communities towards more livable, participatory, and sustainable environments. The organization focuses on promoting and cementing the participation of all citizens in the decision-making, design, and creation process to transform the space they inhabit. Faced with the widespread devastation caused by hurricanes Irma and María in September 2017, La Maraña has been dedicated to leveraging community-driven development as a pathway to Puerto Rico’s just recovery. At the time, their women-led team designed and began executing a replicable community participatory recovery model, titled Imaginación Post-María, in three communities across Puerto Rico. This 6-step model, which combines participatory planning and design with the power of community granting and capacity building, enables community members to collaboratively design a community-driven master plan and implement a commonly elected social impact project in their community; thus acquiring the skills and tools necessary to believe in and manifest their innate capacity to recover in a just manner.

How can I participate?

The National Honor Society invites everyone to participate in their virtual 5K where all participants will run or walk 3.1 miles at any time within the week of May 10-May 16. Participants may complete the 5K in the destination of their choice (treadmill, park, neighborhood, etc). Do not forget to use an application on your mobile phone to track your running pace, as prizes will be awarded to those who complete the 5K in the shortest amount of time and to the participants who raise the most funds. Registration opens on Monday, April 26, and closes on Saturday, May 15; registration has a cost of $20 per participant.

Thank You

Thank you to everyone who participated in the National Honor Society’s annual Next Generation event (5K Edition). There were a total of 93 runners from all parts of the United States, including California, Texas, and Puerto Rico. With your help, we were able to raise a total of $6,507, which exceeded our goal of $5,000! All funds will be donated to La Maraña, a non-profit organization that strengthens and promotes the transition of Puerto Rico’s cities and communities towards more livable, participatory, and sustainable environments. With our donation, La Maraña will continue to cement the participation of all citizens in the decision-making, design, and creation process to transform the spaces they inhabit. Our desire to support La Maraña amidst a global pandemic is yet another example of society coming together for the greater good, and for this reason, we thank you for supporting our cause during these difficult times.
