Support Dance at Oxy!

This campaign ended on January 01, 2022, but you can still make a gift to Associated Students of Occidental College by clicking here!

Funding from this campaign will be split amongst three of Oxy's dance clubs: Dance Team, ¡Azúcar!, and the Folk and Historical Dance Troupe to support our joint dance showcase, which is hosted by Oxy's Dance Team.

Oxy Dance Team is a group of auditioned dancers that represent the College at sporting games and on-campus events. Oxy Dance team typically performs at soccer and basketball games throughout the year and participates in collaborations with other dance clubs on campus and college fundraisers. You can find Oxy Dance Team performing a variety of styles, including jazz, pom, hip-hop, and contemporary. Captains Alison Hwang (‘23) and Sarah Ng (‘23) are excited to host the community dance showcase, sharing the virtual stage with ¡Azúcar! and Folk and Historical dance Troupe, and are proud to highlight the accomplishments of the college’s dance community this academic year.

Oxy’s Latín dance team, ¡Azúcar!, was founded by Xianna Ortiz (‘20) in the fall of 2016. Since then, it has grown from a small circle of friends to a team of fifteen active members and a supporting community of alumni. This spring, ¡Azúcar! is participating in Oxy’s dance showcase fundraiser to encourage celebration of Latinx culture and raise funds for future ¡Azúcar! club events. The team will be performing two numbers: Que Calor (reggaetón style) and Handcuffs (bachata style). The current president of ¡Azúcar!, Destiny Rosas (‘21), has dedicated her time to putting together a virtual performance of videos from teammates across the country.

Oxy’s Folk and Historical Dance Troupe is a 50-year-old dancing community that welcomes students, faculty, staff, and alumni to perform ancient traditional dances from all over the world. The Troupe still holds its original purpose of getting together to celebrate traditions and sharing with each other through dancing. Our repertoire is international. We practice Russian, Balkan, Central European, and Renaissance dances, with special showcases of Viennese Waltzes and Fairy Tales. Additionally, we invite Oxy students to join us for our Square Dances every first-year orientation and are always open to learning new styles from our members who have introduced us to Taiwanese, Israeli, Argentinian, and South African styles. We hope to raise funds to continue learning new dances, purchase costumes and necessary equipment for performances, and to help us archive the many pictures, videos, and materials that we have created over the years.
