Black Arts Fund

The Black Arts Fund is committed to supporting the creative expression and artistic production of Black students at Occidental. In the Spring of 2020, Occidental College senior Darla Howell was granted funds by Oxy Arts to produce a documentary about Black students at Occidental College. The process inspired her to initiate a fund dedicated to supporting creative projects for Black students. The goal of this fund is to provide that sustained support for Black students each year for a wide range of creative projects across disciplines.

From Black Arts Fund creator, Darla Howell -

"Art has consistently brought me joy and expanded my understanding of the world. This fund is aimed at helping more Black students experience that same joy. So often in higher education, particularly at predominantly white colleges, Black students can feel isolated and overwhelmed as they are often a small percentage of the student body. The goal of the Black Arts Fund is to ensure that despite these small numbers, the voices of black students are uplifted and heard. History has shown that in times of strife and political unrest, people turn to art for healing. Black students deserve to experience this and to have their efforts supported. Let us not forget that Black Art is revolution, a documentation of stories often untold, and a cry for freedom. Let this fund be the beginning of our efforts to join this legacy."

Oxy Arts is working with the Black Student Association (BSA) in management of the fund. BSA is creating a sub-committee of students who will review applications and support the grantees over the course of the year as they complete their projects. Applications will be accepted this Fall, with a goal to fund 5 students at $1,000 each, making it possible for them to complete a creative project this academic year that they will present in the Spring of 2021.

Oxy Arts has dedicated $1,200 towards this goal, and will support outreach, support BSA in the development of a framework for reviewing applications, support the students in their creative process, and, if feasible, as a venue for final presentations. Oxy Arts and BSA will have consistent meetings with grantees to help develop a budget and project plan, keep the project on track, and connect students to local artists and art institutions in LA relevant to their projects.

If we can raise more than $5,000, we can fund even more projects and ensure that this fund continues in years to come!
