Expanding Global Perspectives Through French, Arabic, and Cultural Analysis
Alma College’s French and Arabic programs are more than just language courses—they are gateways to global engagement, cultural understanding, and interdisciplinary learning. By integrating immersive experiences such as study abroad, cultural exchanges, and student-led projects, The WLC department provides students with the opportunity to connect their language skills to real-world applications. Additionally, our cultural analysis and interdisciplinary courses taught in English allow students to deepen their cultural humility by critically engaging with complex global narratives, even if they are not fluent in French or Arabic.
These cultural courses provide students with an accessible yet rigorous way to explore the intersections of language, identity, colonial histories, and cultural transformations. Through literature, film, history, and contemporary social issues, students develop critical thinking, global awareness, and cross-cultural understanding, equipping them for careers in diplomacy, international relations, education, and global business.
By leveraging our Spring Term experience in Morroco, we apply what we teach in our French, Arabic, and cultural analysis programs. This unique study abroad experience not only enhances language proficiency but also deepens students’ understanding of North African, Francophone, and Arabic cultures, fostering a truly global perspective.
