Great Lakes Watershed Institute

At the heart of the Great Lakes Watershed Institute (GLWI), we're all about tackling challenges facing the waterwayas that feed the Great Lakes. A big part of our mission is helping communities adapt to climate change, boost resilience, and protect the most vulnerable among us.

We're gearing up for two major events: our summer research progam and the Rural Michigan Initiative Conference in fall 2025. This summer, five students will join Professor Murray Borrello's watershed and policy lab and another five will dive into Professor Amanda Harwood's toxicology lab. These students will receive a generous stipend, free housing, and hands-on experience through our large Deparmtne of Education grant. Addtional monies secured through Professor's Harwood's research include Department of Defense and Environmental Protection Agency grants.

As part of the GLWI’s mission, our Great Lakes watershed work is done in collaboration with and for entities both governmental and non-governmental. This year, they include: the Healthy Pine River group, EPA, Chippewa Nature Center and the cities of Alma and St. Louis Michigan.
