A gift in memory of Joshua Black, PhD

About

In Loving Memory of Joshua Black, PhD

We remember and honor Joshua Black, PhD, who passed away on Oct. 25, 2025. Josh was a brilliant scientist, a beloved colleague, and a cherished friend whose life was cut far too short. Josh joined the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in 2015, following a highly successful postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School with Dr. Johnathan Whetstine. It was there that he began his groundbreaking work on the epigenetic regulation of DNA rereplication — research that reflected both his intellectual depth and his passion for discovery.

Josh’s mind moved fast — so fast, in fact, that his high school teachers used to say they had to stay on their toes to keep up (and all his faculty colleagues in Colorado felt the same way). His creativity and encyclopedic knowledge made him a standout in every room, whether he was helping his graduate school trivia team become champions for a record number of weeks, or leading a research discussion with his own laboratory members and collaborators. He was a force in the Pharmacology department, known for his unmatched enthusiasm for science and his ability to inspire those around him.

After his cancer diagnosis, Josh continued to live with intention and joy. With the help of his sister, he checked off many of the experiences on his wishlist — attending the Broncos’ season opener, watching the Rockies play the Blue Jays, enjoying a concert at Red Rocks, and seeing The Lumineers live. Even in his final days, he was making fantasy football picks and staying connected to the things and people he loved most.

Josh deeply valued his family, friends, and colleagues. His presence enriched our lives, and his absence is profoundly felt. We will always treasure the time we had with him.

In keeping with Josh’s wishes, the results of his clinical autopsy will be used to benefit others. To honor his legacy and support a research lectureship in his honor, we invite you to make a contribution in his memory. Your gift will help carry forward the spirit of inquiry and generosity that defined Josh’s life.

If you would like to make your gift by mail, please make your check out to the University of Colorado Foundation in support of CU Anschutz Fund for Excellence in memory of Josh Black.
