The rapid growth of the Family Send-Off Celebrations reflects how deeply families value a warm, reassuring welcome to Illinois. In 2025, more than 2,000 domestic and international family members and students participated in two days of events at the Illini Union—an increase of approximately 1,500 participants from the prior year. More than 350 handwritten notes were mailed to students during their first weeks on campus, offering comfort and encouragement as they settled into life at Illinois. Many international families, who travel great distances, expressed particular appreciation for the sense of community and connection these celebrations create.

Philanthropic involvement would allow these celebrations to meet increasing demand and ensure that every family experiences a welcome that reflects the care, pride, and hospitality of the Illinois community. Donor support would also make possible the high-quality refreshments, engaging activities, and festive branding that help families feel confident and supported during their student’s transition.

The opportunity for donor impact is especially significant as New Student & Family Experiences plans to introduce a third celebration to serve early-arrival and Living Learning Communities students—an additional 2,000 families who currently cannot be reached. Without philanthropic investment, expanding the program to meet this need is not feasible.
