For 22 years, Sandy Polcyn shaped the sound—and the spirit—of the Ripon High School band program. Known for her signature high heels, sharp wit, and unwavering commitment to excellence, Sandy wasn’t just a teacher. “She was a legend at the school.”
In the classroom and on the stage, she held her students to high standards—not just musically, but personally. She inspired them to show up on time, take their work seriously, and find joy in the process of learning. Her students will never forget the metronome programmed with a nasally voice counting “one, two, three, four”—a tool both humorous and effective in keeping the rhythm.
When Sandy announced her retirement, the community wanted to honor her in a way that reflected her lasting impact. A party and final concert marked the moment, but something more enduring was in order. The Sandy Polcyn Scholarship was established in her name, as a surprise, to carry her legacy forward through future generations of students. True to character, Sandy was deeply touched—but didn’t seek attention or praise. Her heart was always with her students and the music.
Sandy’s influence extended far beyond the walls of the school. On band trips across the country—and even across the world—Sandy made sure students learned as much about life as they did about music. During one trip to Memphis and Nashville, the group drove past the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Sandy stopped the bus so students could take in the historic site—an unscheduled but unforgettable moment.
She also dreamed big. Under her leadership, the Ripon High School band traveled all the way to China. One rainy day near the Yangtze River, she asked the bus driver to take a detour so the group could see the famous waterway—an example of her commitment to making each trip meaningful and memorable.
Tim Lyke, who chaperoned band trips while his children were in the program, was inspired by Sandy’s leadership and dedication. When she announced her retirement, he was one of the driving forces behind organizing the effort to create the scholarship in her honor.
“She was an inspiration for many years,” Tim said, “and that inspiration endures thanks to the scholarship in her name.”
The Sandy Polcyn Scholarship carries her legacy forward—supporting students, celebrating music, and honoring the remarkable impact she made in the Ripon High School community.
