Hanover College Men’s Soccer may be best known for its continued success, winning records, and consistent NCAA tournament appearances. Although these are amazing and memorable accomplishments, I can confidently say these are not the experiences that HCMS players use to define their time in the program.
It is something that my past teammates and I talk about often. Whether it be off-season workouts at the break of dawn, clearing snow off of the turf using lawn chairs for another team, or even tough conversations with Coach Wilco that challenged our ways of thinking; these are the memories that we revisit on a daily basis.
I know the initial thought would be “how do these memories compare to the excitement of winning a championship?” The reality is, these experiences were difficult and uncomfortable, but this is truly what the HCMS culture has been built around.
“Become comfortable being uncomfortable”
Classes are difficult?...“Become comfortable being uncomfortable”
Having trouble balancing athletics with college life?...“Become comfortable being uncomfortable”
Not wanting to spend your offseason working out?...“Become comfortable being uncomfortable”
I can go on for days about the lessons, support, and experiences that Hanover Men’s Soccer has provided its hundreds of past players, but I think this is the best way to briefly explain the power of this program.
It has taught years worth of graduates how to “become comfortable being uncomfortable,” and in the real world, this has proven to be one of the most powerful tools an individual can possess.
