Documenting the History and Social Impact of the Williamsburg Redevelopment & Housing Authority

Hometown: Durham, North Carolina

Department: American Studies

Advisor: Arthur Knight

Established after a 1969 city-wide referendum, the Williamsburg Redevelopment & Housing Authority (WRHA) is one of the city’s main providers
of affordable housing. My research will document and critically assess the history and social impact of the WRHA with a lens attuned to local dynamics of race and class. This project will be an important addition to the local historical record and provide a unique case study of a small city to the history of American public housing and urban renewal.
