Syans fiksyon: Defining Science Fiction For A Haitian Context

Hometown: Yorktown, Virginia

Department: Interdisciplinary Studies

Advisor: Kara Thompson

Project Description:

When I lead writing workshops in Haiti, I get asked what my own stories are about. I struggled to explain. The literal translation of sci-fi is syans fiksyon, but not everyone has heard of that. This project attempts to give another definition of the genre, rooted in a Haitian context. My local partners are eager to carry on the creole legacy of mixing in their work: a little science, a little Vodou; something natural, something artificial; something looking forward, something looking back.
