The Harkis in France: Identity, Memory and Generation as Tools of Political Recognition

The Harkis are a group of Algerian soldiers who fought for the French Army during the Algerian War (1954-1962) and who were later mistreated upon their arrival in France. My honors thesis will look into how Harkis and their descendants have used mediums such as memoirs and film to express their desires for political recognition, as well as how those works relate to the French government's recent steps toward acknowledging the Harkis for their wartime efforts.
