Life in the Modern World: Emerging American Identities in Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio

Hometown: Williamsburg, Virginia

Department: English

Advisor: Christopher MacGowan

My honors thesis will look at how Sherwood Anderson's early 20th century short story cycle Winesburg, Ohio addresses shifts and clashes in modern American identity. Anderson's book examines the transition from small-town nation to fully industrialized global power through landmark prose, and I want to look at the way his influential literary style reflected and influenced the way America defined itself at this pivotal time.
