Gardens beneath the Ash: Contextualizing Natural Imagery within Pompeii's Urban Fabric

By Rebecca Gaborek

Hometown: Havre de Grace, Maryland

Department: Classical Studies

Advisor: Molly Swetnam-Burland

Gardens proliferated in Pompeii by the time Mount Vesuvius' eruption sealed in the city in 79 CE. The purpose of garden artworks situated within domestic gardens remains clouded. I propose an examination of these pieces and the formal gardens that they framed to advance a new hypothesis regarding their role in the Roman city. I hope to delve into the mindsets of individuals from antiquity, a difficult task, by means of anthropological models, archaeological remains, and epigraphic evidence.
