Infecting Bacteria: Using Mass Spectrometry-based Proteomics to Analyze T7 Phage Infection of E. coli

Hometown:  Fairfax, Virginia

Department:  Chemistry

Advisor:  John Poutsma

My Honors project will involve infecting E. coli bacteria with the T7 phage and looking for changes in the protein expression at different times after infection. A bottom-up approach will be used in which we identify proteins by analyzing their peptide fragments using HPLC-tandem mass spectrometry. By identifying modifications in protein expression after different time exposures, insight into protein function can be deduced, helping us understand more about both the bacteria and phage.
