Egoism and the Repugnant Conclusion

Hometown: Frederick, Maryland

Department: Philosophy

Advisor: Phillip Swenson

The repugnant conclusion is the conclusion that a world of people with good lives is worse than a world of many more people with lives barely worth living. It may be derived from Parfit's solution to the non-identity problem as well as from the principle of benign addition as formulated by Huemer. I will attempt to show that neither of these derivations of the repugnant conclusion justify substantial ethical implications.
