Unspeakable Sensations: Decoding the Language of Touch in the Nineteenth-Century English Novel

Hometown: Greenwich, Connecticut

Department: English

Advisor: Deborah Morse

My Honors Thesis will explore the language of touch in the nineteenth-century English novel, against the backdrop of Victorian social etiquette and the developing science of sensation. By analyzing how moments of touch conform to, straddle and violate gender, class and etiquette boundaries, my research will examine sensation as an illicit form of communication, to contribute original insight to this emerging field in Victorian Studies.
