Kafka in Space: Investigating Public Space in Fin-De-Siècle Prague and Franz Kafka's Literature

Hometown: Manhattan Beach, California

Department: German Studies

Advisor: Robert Leventhal

This project examines the meaning and construction of memorialization in public space in Prague's architecture/urban design as well as in the narratives of Franz Kafka. It seeks to answer the questions: How were the conflicts of language and identity articulated in public urban space? What did public space mean for Kafka considering this Prague context? How is public space thus constructed in his literature? How does physical and imagined space bear upon the other in Kafka's Prague?
