Discovering the ion channel mechanisms of breathing

Various ion channels within the preBotzinger Complex are responsible for different properties of breathing. While we understand many of the physiological mechanisms of breathing, the specific ion channels are yet to be determined. My Honors Thesis will investigate sodium channels in the preBotzinger Complex, specifically NaV 1.6 channels, which are responsible for respiratory bursts that are required for inspiratory rhythms.
