Particle Manipulation and Cross-step Filtration in the American Shad

Hometown: Flemington, New Jersey

Department: Biology

Advisor: S. Laurie Sanderson

It is not yet understood how filter-feeding fish are able to extract food particles from the water. I will be determining whether the American shad are using the recently-discovered method of cross-step filtration for filtering food from the water without clogging their oral cavities. My research will be the first to study food particle manipulation inside the mouth of any fish species. My discoveries are exciting because they indicate the broad applicability of cross-step filtration.
