J.S. Mill and Representative Democracy in the Athenian Spirit

Hometown:  Williamsburg, Virginia

Department:  Government

Advisor:  John Lombardini

My honors thesis seeks to explain John Stuart Mill's understanding of representative government, the origin of his ideas regarding Athens, and the influence that Mill has had on other political theorists. While my thesis will be primarily focused around the institutions proscribed by Mill to ensure democracy and their origins in the radical Athenian democracy, I will also take into consideration other ideas as far as they influence his defense of representative democracy.
