Accessing the Cannabinoid Family of Compounds through an Alkynyl-Prins Cyclization

Hometown:  Virginia Beach, Virginia

Department:  Chemistry

Advisor:  Robert Hinkle

Project Description:

I will investigate the synthesis of cannabinoids through a novel methodology, using an alkynyl-Prins cyclization as the vital step in its structural formation. The construction of various cannabinoids will take inspiration from a procedure developed by Dr. Robert J. Hinkle for a more efficient route of synthesis of polycyclic heterocycles using an alkynyl-Prins cyclization. Cannabinoids have shown significant biological activity for neurodegenerative diseases as well as with analgesic effects.
