Project Description:

Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” and Barbara Kingsolver’s “The Bean Trees” share a crucial commonality: both novels paint a portrait of strong female solidarity as a response to a “backlash” of anti-women policies and rhetoric that begs further exploration and is especially relevant in the current political climate. In researching Kingsolver and Atwood’s texts in the context of backlash, I intend to explore the effectiveness of solidarity as balm and defense for struggling women.
