Understanding Cell Division By Looking at Potential Kinases that Cause Ulp1 Inhibition

For my thesis, I will use genetic screening to identify any kinases that may be altering the SUMO protease Ulp1. Ulp1 is a Small-Ubiquitin-like MOdifier (SUMO) protease that takes part in SUMO maturation and deconjugation in yeast.  This protein is also conserved in human cells. This is important because the SUMOylation and deSUMOylation of proteins may affect cell division in yeast so that cancer develops.  This means that we can apply our findings regarding Ulp1 in yeast to human cancer cells.
