Social Anxiety, Pain, & Exclusion: The Hidden Link

Hometown: Woodbridge, Virginia

Department: Neuroscience

Advisor: Cheryl Dickter

Project Description:

Social anxiety afflicts roughly 13% of the US population and is common on college campuses, where social pressures are especially great. Further, it has been suggested that the feelings accompanying social exclusion are akin to those experienced in painful situations. This project seeks to establish a cognitive link between social anxiety, physical pain, and exclusion. By monitoring brainwave activity, we can draw conclusions about the joint impact of all three on the lives of college students.
