SERS Analysis of Ozone Fading of Madder Lake and Carmine Paints

Hometown: Arlington, Virginia

Department: Chemistry

Advisor: Rachel O'Brien

Research on ozone damage to artist materials rarely includes analysis of oil paints, and largely relies on analytical techniques that require large samples. The larger the sample, the more likely it is that the damage done by removing it from a painting will outweigh the benefits of knowing whether the work of art has been damaged by ozone. I am working to develop a reproducible method for testing small samples of oil paints for ozone damage using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.
