Traditional Practices and Shifting Perceptions in Mattaponi and Pamunkey Fisheries in Virginia

Hometown: Vienna, Virginia

Department: Anthropology

Advisor: Dr. Danielle Moretti-Langholtz

The population of the historically significant fish American shad has plummeted in the past century due to overfishing and habitat degradation. In 2014, the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Indian reservations in Virginia lost state funding for shad hatcheries that they have operated for decades. My research will explore how politics and a changing environment affect traditional fishery practices, culture, and sovereignty on the reservations.
