Shenkman Jewish Center Kitchen

Hillel has been on the campus of William & Mary for over 50 years. The organization has served the Jewish students as best as it could, but it was not until now that Jewish students had a physical structure to call their own in which to feel secure and at home. This past Fall marked the completion of the Shenkman Jewish Center. The SJC offers a beautiful and safe environment for Jewish students to congregate on holidays, share in Sabbath meals, meetings, and feel at home. One of them major goals of the SJC is to be able to offer kosher food for Jewish students on campus. This will not only serve our current student population for whom attaining kosher food is currently not possible, but it will also enable William & Mary to recruit students who are kosher observant and will open up the market to a new category of student otherwise excluded. Having certified kosher food on campus is also significant for Muslim students as many Muslim students only eat Halal certified food and kosher food can often be substituted for Halal. Jewish students have been waiting for the opportunity to come together weekly for a kosher, Shabbat meal, holiday meals, and eventually daily kosher food on campus for a long time. This funding will help supply the Shenkman Jewish Center with the kitchen equipment necessary to fulfill this dream.
