African Mothers and French Fathers: The debate over mixed race children in colonial French West Africa

Hometown: Austin, Texas

Department: History

Advisor: Guillaume Aubert

I will examine the colonial experience of African mothers of mixed race children in French West Africa in the late 19th century to investigate the complex interplay of gender, race, and colonialism. My project will explore how the contests over the futures of mixed race children revealed the expectations of both sides about gender, sexuality, and how these were embedded and expressed in local and imperial politics.
