Outfit the R/V Virginia

This campaign ended on June 30, 2020, but you can still make a gift to William & Mary by clicking here!

Our new flagship oceanographic research vessel is the most advanced ship in its class. The 93-foot R/V Virginia helps VIMS deliver science for the Bay and impact for the world with wet and dry lab spaces, a large working deck, advanced propulsion and navigational systems, and high capacity cranes to deploy robotic vehicles, trawls, dredges, and scientific buoys.

The Commonwealth of Virginia made a groundbreaking investment of $10 million in building the R/V Virginia. Now you have the opportunity to outfit the ship with advanced technology to help us fulfill our mission. Tribefunding is a critical part of helping us meet a generous $400,000 match posed by the Mary Morton Parsons Foundation - to complete this match we need to raise less than $40,000 from individual supporters.

Our overall goal is to raise $1,000,000 to purchase and install a sophisticated sonar suite. This sonar suite includes a multibeam that uses sound waves to collect data for conversion into high-resolution maps and images and an echosounder, which will enable collection of data sets on species of marine life anywhere in the water column.

With the multibeam and echosounder, the R/V Virginia will be ready to:

 • Encourage sustainable offshore energy development by conducting environmental impact studies

 • Improve data collection on important fish species, leading to better advice for policy makers on sustaining our fisheries

 • Discover what’s happening on the seafloor – all the way out to the edge of the continental shelf and all along the eastern seaboard

Agency: Virginia Institute of Marine Science Foundation
Type: Expendable
Fund: R/V Virginia Outfitting Fund
Purpose: To provide support for the purchase and installation of equipment to benefit the R/V Virginia.
Goal Not Met: Continue with our year-long fundraising effort to meet the target amount of $1M.
Goal Exceeded: Up to $1M, funds will be spent on the overall cost of the multibeam system. If we exceed the $1M overall amount there are additional equipment needs for the vessel such as a rosette for water quality sampling.
