About

Art has the unique ability to build connections and to inspire action. As the world faces dramatic loss of biodiversity and the natural resources it provides, there is an urgent need to cultivate a diverse generation of leaders who can implement innovative solutions to global conservation challenges. Art is a valuable tool for connecting people to nature and inspiring people to take action to conserve the environment. The Institute for Integrative Conservation (IIC) is partnering with Augmented Island Studios (AIS), the W&M Office of Sustainability, the W&M Art History Department, the Muscarelle Museum of Art, Midtown Row, and the City of Williamsburg to engage students in the design and implementation of an immersive conservation mural that will inspire the Williamsburg community engage in meaningful conservation action.

Unique ideas come from innovative and entrepreneurial thinkers. This spring, the IIC and partners hosted an Immersive Conservation Mural Pitch competition where teams of W&M students pitched ideas for a conservation mural and a complementary Augmented Reality (AR) Instagram app that will enable audiences to interact with the mural and connect with nature through an immersive experience. By integrating art, technology, and conservation, this interactive mural will foster a sense of connection to nature and will inspire the Williamsburg community to take action to conserve the environment. Students from the winning team will receive a prize and will work alongside AIS programmers, artists, the Williamsburg City Council, and community members to design and implement the mural and AR experience in the fall of 2021. This project will (1) help students build their computer programming, artistic design and conservation skills, and (2) will result in an interactive mural and augmented reality application that will bring together W&M students and the Williamsburg community to engage in meaningful conservation.
