Title: The Cross-Lingual Critical Discourse Analysis of American, Turkish, German and Austrian Media Coverage of Pfizer Covid-19 Vaccine Inventors Dr. Ozlem Tureci and Dr. Ugur Sahin pre, during, and post Vaccine Discovery
Department: German Studies
Description: This cross-lingual critical discourse analysis will evaluate coverage of the invention of the Pfizer vaccine in American, Turkish, German and Austrian media. The case study of the Pfizer inventors Dr. Ozlem Tureci and Dr. Ugur Sahin is crucial to examine the treatment of Turkish immigrants in Germany. In an environment where many Turkish immigrants are discriminated against, the subjects? treatment throughout their scientific journey will open a discussion about discrimination and acceptance. Researching media (books, articles, podcasts, and interviews) from before, during, and following their invention, will examine the change in the perception of this couple over time. Examining articles from different nations (America, Turkey, Germany and Austria) will unveil the different perceptions of their work, discovery, and success. This cross-lingual analysis will be conducted by reading each article in their respective native language, while analyzing the tone, mood, diction, punctuation, and syntax of each written work. For auditory sources tone, mood, diction, syntax, and pacing. The goal of this research project is to analyze the perception of Tureci and Sahin within the different countries and understand the effects of how Turkish immigrants are perceived in Germany.
