Title: Political Obligations and Practical Reasons
Department: Philosophy
Description: This project will explore questions of political authority, with special focus on contemporary views which build from the Lockean and Hobbesian traditions. Primarily, can political authority elicit a moral obligation on behalf of those who fall under its purview, and, if yes, how? This project aims to carve out a middle ground between those who believe that government is able to elicit a moral obligation from the Lockean tacit consent and those who reject this and argue that government is unable to generate obligations to perform certain actions.
