Title: Examining the Impact of Transnational Crime on Transitional Justice Mechanisms
Department: International Relations
Description: This project will explore how criminal actors, such as gangs and drug trafficking groups, impact transitional justice. Transitional justice is the process following a regime transition in which newly democratic states work to hold perpetrators in past regimes accountable while seeking the truth about the regime's actions and establishing a collective historical memory. This research seeks to explain the relationship between past regimes and contemporary criminal groups. Additionally, it would explain the effect of criminal groups on transitional justice mechanisms. Using a mixed methods approach, this research will explore these relationships using case studies in Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Colombia.
