Performing the Spiritual in Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" and John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme"

Hometown: McLean, Virginia

Department: English

Advisor: Richard Lowry

Jazz and Beat poetry are two of the most enduring art forms of the 20th century. My Honors Thesis examines connections between the two forms, particularly in their spiritual performance, focusing on the compelling examples of Allen Ginsberg's epic manifesto "Howl" and John Coltrane's classic album "A Love Supreme". This thesis will contribute to a broader tradition of scholarly work that examines the two art forms in connection with 1960s counterculture.
