Positive Parenting: The Effects of Parental Supportive Responses on Teen Emotions and Mental Health
Hometown: Morgantown, West Virginia
Department: Psychology
Advisor: Janice Zeman
My honors thesis will investigate how parental responses to youth emotional expressivity may serve as a protective factor for mental health concerns in later adolescence. Employing a unique longitudinal design that includes both adolescents and their parents, this research aims to understand ways in which positive parenting, particularly supporting the teenager's expressions of anger and sadness, may prevent debilitating anxiety and depression in high school and college.
