Myth of a Nation: Nationalism in the Fantasy of J.R.R. Tolkien and Neil Gaiman

Hometown: Salem, Virginia

Advisor: Keith Johnson

Project Description:

My Honors Thesis will explore the relationship of myth and national identity in fantasy literature through a comparative analysis of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Neil Gaiman's contemporary fantasy novel, American Gods. By investigating nationalism and multiculturalism in Tolkienesque and post-Tolkien fantasy, this research will contribute to understanding of the genre's evolution in its portrayal of the mythic narratives with which a nation defines itself.
