Tonogensis in Korean

For my honors thesis, I will be researching tonogenesis, or the emergence of tone, in Korean. My project is building on my past research, where I found that important perceptual information is present in the vowels that follow certain consonants in Korean. Consonants within certain series are loosing some of their contrasting consonantal cues, but are being followed by vowels with significantly different F0 (pitch) values. This perceptual information may be the first signs that tone is evolving in Korean. I will use the data I’ve gathered in my past research project to characterize the present state of tonogenesis in Korean with attention to the wider body of tonogensis literature, in order to explore how Korean fits into the broader theories.
