Effects on Macroscopic Properties of Polymers by Graphene Oxide

Industries use polymers for various uses, including plastics and coatings. Many of these polymers are created with an intention to lock out water and water vapor, but they are not perfect. Through the incorporation of nanomaterials into polymers, nanocomposites are created that affect the properties of the polymers. By using a strong nanomaterial such as graphene oxide (GO), the water permeability of a polymer can be decreased, leading to less water uptake over time. Beyond effects on water permeability, GO can also increase the stiffness and strength of a polymer, as well as increase the polymer's lifespan. My project will be studying these macroscopic effects of GO on various polymers, namely polyimides.
