Digitize Historic Sunflower Newspapers

Did you know that every issue of the Sunflower, our student newspaper, is available in Wichita State University Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives, for onsite browsing? To help celebrate WSU's 125th anniversary in 2020, we want to digitize and provide online access to thousands of pages of the Sunflower from its 1896 beginnings through 1977. Providing this valuable resource will cost $8100.  We need your help!

This digitization project covers important moments in WSU’s history such as:

  • transitions from Fairmount College to University of Wichita to Wichita State University;
  • impact of World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam on students, faculty and campus;
  • tragic 1970 WSU football team plane crash;
  • campus growth and growing pains;
  • accomplishments of students, administrators, faculty and staff

Lighter moments are there as well, including:

  • fashions and trends from the Victorian to Disco;
  • intercollegiate athletics and intramurals;
  • the infamous April Fools' Day issues

Each issue will be digitally scanned by trained professionals using state-of-the-art equipment. To aid users in finding content, online tools and platforms will be developed and be made available to Shocker fans worldwide. Our history is worth it!

Each donation will be acknowledged on the website. Donations of $100 or greater will give donors the opportunity to adopt a year or honor a person.

Gifts that take us beyond $8100 will support maintenance of the collection and, as copyright laws allow, digitization of additional years of the newspaper.

Thank you for helping us preserve WSU's history!
