Mentorship: A Long Standing Wheaton Tradition

Professor Hilary Gaudet ’09 is part of a tradition of excellence in Wheaton's Department of Chemistry that can be traced back to beloved Professor Bojan Jennings, who served as a mentor to Hilary's mentor, Professor Elita Pasta-Landis—Wheaton Class of 1969—when she was an undergraduate.

"While I was completing my biochemistry honors thesis as a Wheaton undergraduate, I worked closely with my advisor, Professor Elita Pastra-Landis '69. She remained a mentor throughout my graduate studies at Brown University. When I had an opportunity to teach at Wheaton—first as a lab instructor while still working on my Ph.D., then as a visiting professor, and now as a full-time assistant professor—I knew that I wanted to do for my students what Elita has done for me. In 2016, I served as an advisor for Sara Morrow '16 as she worked on her honors thesis and received an American Cancer Society Fuller Fellowship, an award that I also won when I was a Wheaton student. And last school year, while I was on sabbatical and conducting research at Brown, Carina Sclafani ’20 joined me to work on her honors thesis. We were both visiting scholars at Brown."  —Professor Hilary Gaudet ’09

Mentorship plays a big part in the effort to building strong cohorts and preparing students to take on leadership roles. Wheaton faculty are invested in the success of their students, helping them be awarded grants, get into top graduate programs, and pursue satisfying careers.

Your Gift. Your Impact. Your Wheaton.

See how your support can impact the Wheaton community.

  • Assist in covering costs associated with health and safety measures put into action on campus in response to COVID-19. Current estimates place mitigation expenses of extensive testing, remote learning, and costs related to new campus protocols at $6 to $7 million.
  • Help to fund scholarships for over 90% of our students through tuition discounts, need-based aid, and merit scholarships.
  • Improve the quality of life on campus by funding ongoing upgrades to living and learning spaces on our beloved campus.
  • Advance the Wheaton Edge, which supports internships and research opportunities, career development programming, and learning beyond the classroom.
  • Empower students to pursue their passions within Wheaton's vibrant community—in-person and remotely—that still buzzes from the activity from more than 100 student organizations and programs.
