About

Giving Day contributions of every size make a major difference! Support Freer House today.

Built by industrialist and art collector Charles Lang Freer in 1892, the Freer House is a masterpiece of American shingle-style architecture and the birthplace of the Freer Gallery of Art (NMAA, Smithsonian) in Washington, D.C. As an early champion of American, Asian, and Middle Eastern art, Freer’s legacy of multi-culturalism is celebrated in the house’s mission and programming today. These bonds to our nation’s capital and much of the world make the Freer House an ambassador of Detroit’s unique cultural heritage. Freer House is the headquarters of the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute at 71 E. Ferry Street.

Support the Historic Freer House and Garden

This year, we are raising funds to support annual maintenance and improvements for the revitalized Freer House garden.

Today only, your gift will be doubled when you choose to make a gift to the Historic Freer House Garden Fund! An anonymous donor is matching donations dollar-for-dollar up to $1,000.

This public garden located at 71 E. Ferry Street, just east of Woodward, offers a tranquil place of beauty and respite for students, staff and the surrounding community to enjoy at any time and in every season. Watch the video above to see a time-lapse seasonal tour of the Freer House garden, featuring Asian and American plants, a Japanese stone lantern and comfortable seating for meditating or just relaxing!

With a donation today, you can help protect, restore, and maintain this historic landmark and public garden.

Achieve your charitable goals and create your WSU legacy with a gift in your estate plan.
