About

Why become an English major? This UW Giving campaign encourages students to answer that question while supporting them and the department.

The UW Department of English promotes cultural understanding and participation through extensive reading, thoughtful intellectual inquiry, and rigorous academic, professional, and creative writing. At undergraduate and graduate levels, our curriculum extends from composition and rhetoric to literary and critical studies to creative writing. Our internationally recognized faculty, who have won numerous teaching awards, offer a variety of courses in literature, film, popular culture, digital media, composition, professional writing, and theory. We encourage students to pursue studies that intrigue and challenge them.

The English Major campaign will ask students in our Gateway to the Major course (ENGL 2025) and Senior Seminar (ENGL 4999) to develop videos on the theme of "Why Become an English Major?" Each English major who develops a video will receive a specially designed "Ask Me Why I Became an English Major" hoodie.

Proceeds from this campaign will support English majors, the professional development of students and faculty in the department, and the department's fundraising goals.

Thank you!
