USM Students Need You More Than Ever

Friends, alumni, faculty, staff, community members, and students: You are playing a huge role in helping out USM's most vulnerable students.

The current global health crisis is affecting USM students in profound ways. Unforeseen travel expenses, medical expenses, uncertain employment and other financial emergencies are hitting them hard. The USM Student Emergency Fund was set up to support them during difficult times such as these.

If you're able to help, donations are greatly needed.

We know this situation is affecting all of you too, so first, take care of yourself. Together, we will once again thrive.

If you'd like to make a donation by phone or mail, you can do so:

By calling Vicki LaQuerre at 207-228-8521

Or sending a check to the USM Foundation at:

P.O. Box 9300

Portland, ME 04104-9300

We're joining forces with USM's graduating class - the Class of 2020 - who are running their own campaign to raise $5,555 for the Student Emergency Fund. The money they've raised is now included in our total. Thank you, students for helping out your fellow Huskies! Class of 2020 students can make a gift below.

Today is "Giving Tuesday Now"!

Today the world comes together for a day of unity and giving called Giving Tuesday Now. Today, people and organizations across the globe are finding ways, big and small, to address the COVID crises.

Here at USM, we continue to see a critical need for donations to support USM students affected by the pandemic. Almost $50,000 in aid has been distributed to 98 students so far - a lifeline to help them through this crisis. More applications are coming in daily.

Thank you for your generosity this spring. Know that your donation has directly helped a student in distress. For #GivingTuesdayNow, why not pass the word along to your friends and family about this critical need? Giving feels good!

The USM community is coming together like never before

Thank you to all who have supported USM students during this very challenging time. Their resilience is amazing and you are making it possible for our most vulnerable students to make it through this crisis.

It's truly amazing how the USM Community has come together to show their support. Just a few examples of the incredible generosity we've seen in the last few weeks.

- We've just added $20,000 to the Student Emergency Fund from members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). After Spring registrations were cancelled, many members donated their registration fees to support USM students. Thank you, all!

- USM faculty, staff, board members, alumni, and friends have shown up in a huge way to support students in crisis. Every donation means so much and together, the individual donations add up to more than $35,000!

- Employer partners including Martin's Point Health Care and Maine Craft Distilling have generously supported our students where and when they needed it most. Thank you!

Students in the Class of 2020 have raised nearly $2,000 to support their fellow Huskies and hope to raise a total of $5,555 before the end of the semester. Their donation totals are now reflected above. Thank you for showing what "Huskies help Huskies" really means.

The need is still great, though. Every day that this pandemic and its associated economic impact continues, more students are reaching out for help from the Student Emergency Fund to secure basic necessities such as food, housing, medical services, and technology needs to help them learn remotely.

Please continue to share this campaign with your friends and family using the sharing buttons on our campaign page. Also, be sure to visit the "Advocates" tab to find out about creative ways to encourage giving - such as matching gifts and challenges.

Thank you for being part of this incredible community.

You're making a huge difference

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. You are making a critical difference to USM students in need. We recently received an update from the Dean of Students' office, who handles the granting of Student Emergency Funds. This is what they had to say:

I think it's safe to say this is the strongest period of need USM students have seen in a long while, and some students are desperate for any financial support they can get. They are incredibly grateful when we're able to grant them funds, even if we cannot grant the full amount they ask for. Some students would likely be homeless without this help.

The office is seeing new applications for help every day, mostly related to job losses and needing help paying for rent, food, car insurance, utilities, and other living essentials. Others need help paying for medical bills, and for purchasing computers in order to do coursework remotely.

Your donation is helping us continue to meet this heartbreaking need. Thank you!

Your support has been incredible

Dear friends,

We are overwhelmed with the heart-warming support of our students that you have shown. In just a few days, you have helped us raise nearly $30,000! That is incredible. To be able to count on you even these uncertain times means so much.

In addition to the many gifts from you, our friends, our community partners have also stepped up to support USM students. Martin’s Point Health Care has generously pledged $10,000 to the USM Student Emergency Fund to help get our students through these challenging times.

The longer we are all impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, the greater the strain on the finances of our most vulnerable students. We’ll continue to share opportunities to support our students through May 9, USM’s Commencement Day. Though we don’t know what this event will look like at this point, we know we will be beyond excited to see USM’s Class of 2020 – who have gone through so much this year – graduate. And you have been a huge part in making that happen.

Please spread the word to others who may want to support our students at this critical time, and THANK YOU!
