----------------

USM has so many incredibly talented students. But many of them don't have the financial resources – or even the access to financial aid – to complete their degree, especially in these trying times.

For this year’s June Alumni Challenge – we challenge you – our amazing alumni – to help us raise $10,000 for critical student needs to ensure USM can welcome talented students onto campus and into our communities.

Help us support:

The Access to Education Scholarship: This scholarship is available to students who are not eligible to receive federal financial aid, which 85% of students rely on to pay for college. Funded entirely through donations, this scholarship makes it possible for many talented students to attend USM who wouldn't otherwise be able to.

The USM Student Emergency Fund: his fund was specifically created to address the kinds of short-term financial emergencies our most vulnerable students are facing right now: unforeseen travel expenses, medical expenses, job losses, and other financial crises that are placing severe stress on many students.

USM General Scholarships: Scholarships attract talented, hard-working young scholars to USM from a variety of backgrounds – many first-generation college students – who will contribute to our community and become a valued part of Maine's future workforce. Your scholarship gift expands access to education for our students and strengthens pathways to academic and career success.

Thank you for all you do. And stay tuned to find out how you can help by showcasing your own talents!

Updates
Thank You For Supporting Usm Students!

We're thrilled to announce that, with your generosity, we reached (and exceeded!) our goal of raising $10,000 for critical students needs at USM. The grand tally was over $14,000! These funds will allow USM to provide scholarships and emergency funds to talented students so they can continue their education. Thank you.

And thank you to our talented alumni who made the June Alumni Challenge extra fun this year by participating in our first virtual talent show. With everything going on in the world, our alumni helped us laugh, made us think, and filled our hearts with joy. And now... the votes are in.

Estelle Sanders '67 received the most votes for her wonderful poems about life in COVID times. We received many comments about how these poems resonated:

"Really enjoyed Estelle’s poems. I can totally relate to “The Refrigerator” poem. Well done Estelle!"

and

"Authentic and reflective...... I could relate!!! Really enjoyed Estelle’s poems...."

Way to go Estelle! And let's give all our talented alumni our thanks and appreciation. You're all amazing!

Thank you again for being there for USM's students, and have a wonderful summer.

As befitting her degree in English, Estelle shares two of her recent poems, both inspired by COVID-19 and the way our lives have changed over the last few months.

10. David Shaw ‘76 G Sends Us A Message… With His Harmonica

Esteemed alumnus of USM’s School of Business, David Shaw ‘76G, brought in some very talented friends for this rendition of “God Bless America.”

Watch the video here.

He explained, “We celebrated the reopening of the PMA public sculpture park immediately following the BLM protests in Portland.  My musician friends (and I) felt that “God bless America “ was the right hopeful tone to set - believing that Americans can and must address racial injustice and broader social injustices that are inconsistent with making our society work for all Americans. Protesting, proactive civic involvement, righting wrongs and endlessly striving for a better future are critical elements of good citizenship here.

On tenor saxophone my good friend - the great Walter Blanding. And, on superb vocals, his significant other Kokoh. I was grateful to be able to add on with a G harp."

Beautiful.. and thought provoking. That's the power of music! Does David get your vote? Make a donation above to get access to the voting poll and let us know!

She didn’t get enough of USM as a PoliSci Major so she came back to campus and now serves as Vice President of the USM Foundation and Executive Director of Alumni and Public Engagement. You might know her best as frequent emcee of USM Alumni Events and her affinity for giving out lots of USM swag.

Here, Corey shows off her adorable pup Shiloh who is great at rolling over and just-ok at giving kisses. Enthusiasm counts though and these two have it!
