Turning of the Maples Virtual 5K

This campaign ended on October 25, 2020, but you can still make a gift to University of North Carolina at Asheville by clicking here!

One of our most beloved UNC Asheville traditions, the Turning of the Maples, is going virtual and is coming directly to you!

Under a canopy of vibrant yellow and red leaves, UNC Asheville students, faculty, and staff gather on the Quad for the annual Turning of the Maples. Previous years included a snack of maple cookies and hot apple cider, lawn games, painted pumpkins, and live music performed by UNC Asheville students.

Now you can bring this tradition home for our Turning of the Maples Virtual 5K! Get outside to enjoy your own changing leaves while raising vital funding for the UNC Asheville fund. This is a safe, socially-distant way for you to enjoy this UNC Asheville tradition while supporting UNC Asheville students and programs.

Our virtual 5K (or 3.1 miles) can be completed anywhere! Participants can run/walk their 5K any time over the weekend of October 23-25. Get outside and enjoy the beautiful turning leaves anywhere you choose. You can run, jog, or walk in your neighborhood, in a park, or on a trail. We encourage you to share a photo of your 5K outing on social media using the hashtag #TurningoftheMaples.

A portion of your $10 registration is a gift to the UNC Asheville fund, which supports students and programs across campus. Your registration includes:

  • An exclusive Turning of the Maples 5K beanie hat
  • A Turning of the Maples 5K sticker
  • A downloadable race bib to print off at home.

*These items will be sent out as quickly as possible, but may not arrive prior to the virtual 5K weekend.

There is also a little friendly competition to motivate you:

The virtual "team" with the highest number of participants by Sunday, October 25 will receive a Turning of the Maples care package: a maple leaf cookie cutter, a recipe for our famous maple cookies, and some hot cider mix.

Who are the teams?

  • Alumni
  • Students
  • OLLI Members
  • UNC Asheville Faculty and Staff
