Please join UMF as we celebrate our storied alumnus, hall-of-famer, and coach Dick Meader '68. In honor of Coach Meader, the UMF Athletics Hall of Fame area will be enhanced and renamed the Dick Meader Hall of Fame Room. This space currently showcases the highest accomplishments of our teams, student-athletes, and coaches, including the growing list of inductees to the Hall of Fame.  Our goal is to further enhance our ability to recognize these high achieving honorees and to improve the functionality of the space for recruiting, receptions, conferences, and team meetings. “It is fitting to recognize in perpetuity the much-decorated and beloved Coach Meader, himself a member of several halls of fame, in association with excellence in athletics at UMF,” said Julie Davis, Director of Athletics and Fitness and Recreation.

"For the last 20 years, I have had the good fortune to observe Dick serve others as a teacher, coach, mentor, colleague, family member, and friend," said Davis. "With great humility and integrity, he taught our student-athletes not only the fundamentals of sport, but also many more transferrable life lessons, among them the values of selflessness, teamwork, and leadership. He has a knack for building strong relationships with players, students, colleagues, and peers that have lasted a lifetime."

In 44 seasons of coaching collegiate men's basketball, Meader amassed 513 victories, including 353 in 27 seasons at UMF. In his final season at Farmington, he notched his 500th victory (on January 10, 2020, vs. NVU–Lyndon), led the Beavers to a program-record 22 single-season wins, and was named the North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his career. Meader also received the National Association of Basketball Coaches 2020 NABC Outstanding Service Award.

In addition to coaching men's basketball and baseball (for 19 seasons) at UMF, Meader also was an instructor in the school's popular coaching minor, teaching the fundamentals, philosophy, and finer points of coaching through methods courses in both basketball and baseball/softball.

Please consider making a gift to the Dick Meader Hall of Fame Campaign. Your gift will help us recognize, honor, and thank him for his lifelong contributions as a teacher-coach.  In addition to his remarkable tenure at UMF, he mentored many graduates from both Thomas College and Farmington, spread the love of sport through his work with campers at the Pine Tree Basketball Camp, and shared his knowledge with coaches (new and seasoned) through countless clinics and “bull sessions” over the years.

*Coach Meader retired at the end of last year, and a retirement celebration date has yet to be determined due to current limitations on gatherings.  Stay tuned for further information as it becomes available.
