Service Immersion Trips 2021-2022

This campaign ends on April 30 at 11:59PM EDT

For more than 25 years, the University of Detroit Mercy has taken students out of the classroom and into the struggling neighborhoods of Detroit, the hurricane ravaged streets of New Orleans, the little villages of El Salvador, and into the suffering stories of migrants in El Paso, Texas.

These service immersion trips, sponsored by University Ministry, seek to educate students about the social issues that create and perpetuate systemic injustice, to foster and deepen their faith lives, to introduce diverse cultures, and to engage in service. Participating in Detroit Mercy's service immersion trips offers opportunity for students to be contemplatives in action in the Jesuit and Mercy tradition.

In the words of Fr. Peter Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., former General Superior of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Students must let the gritty reality of this world into their lives so they can learn to feel it, think about it critically, respond to its suffering and engage it constructively. In the constitution of the Sisters of Mercy, we are inspired to live the words, As Sisters of Mercy we sponsor institutions to address our enduring concerns and to witness to Christ's mission. Within these institutions we, together with our co-workers and those we serve, endeavor to model mercy and justice and to promote systemic change according to these ideals.

During the weeklong service immersion experience, students are engaged in direct service, simple living, critical thinking, cultural diversity, theological reflection and solidarity. This is an opportunity to engage in experiences that can change hearts, transform perspectives, deepen faith and lead to social action. After a service immersion trip, students will see and experience the world around them in a different light and in the spirit of our Jesuit and Mercy traditions, students are challenged to put their faith into action.

Service immersion trips are not funded by Detroit Mercy. Students and University Ministry staff work hard to raise funds to subsidize costs and cover student scholarships. Some funds raised cover the general cost of trips to lower the overall price of participation. Your contribution will lessen the burden to give more students a chance to participate in this life-changing experience. Every contribution helps! You can make a general donation or make a gift in honor of a student, or staff or faculty member .
